Timber importing was a big industry in the 1950s, the wood being for the post war building boom.  Norwegian, Swedish, German and ships from other countries around the Baltic brought in large consignments.  
It is interesting to note the lax standards of Health and Safety in those days.  I was allowed access to the timber yards (remember that I was a teenager) and climbed the huge stacks of timber to be able to take my photos.  I don't recall any accidents to the workforce and certainly I never had any problems myself.
